Very rare Secessionist Badge or possibly watch chain ornament /fob . It is made of solid cast brass and measures 1-3/8"×2-5/8" . It is sturdily made and has a wonderful chocolatey green patina . This example was dug in Charleston , South Carolina . Charleston was a "Firebrand " city for secession and states rights. This historically important relic, is of a snake climbing a palmetto tree, the symbol of the violation of states rights and was adopted as the Southern Cause Emblem for the December 18, 1860 Southern Convention for Secession .
I have illustrated in the pictures, other Secessionist Badges of other types. Also pictured is the "Banner of Secession", which has this very Emblem in the center with a ribbon Banner with the words "Southern Republic " . Also, this very same secession Emblem was used on the South Carolina "Palmetto Guards" buttons. I doubt you will ever get a chance at another one of these anytime soon.
