Beautiful and Authentic Confederate 6pdr High Lip Bormann cannon ball . This one is unloaded and has a 1/2" hole on the very bottom where I unloaded it. If you look into the hole, it reveals that this round is a caseshot round. You can see the lead balls embedded in the sulfur matrix. The Bormann time fuse is unpunched. We can tell it's Confederate by the raised Lip on the fuse sticking out of the shell . Their Union counterparts did not have this . You can still see some of the numbers on the fuse. This specimen is in excellent condition, and was personally dug by me. I dug it at Shiloh many years ago. About 30+ years ago. This shell was fired probably at a high arch trajectory and intended to be airburst over the Union lines, but the Confederate artilleryman forgot to punch the fuse , allowing the shells continued flight landing way behind the Union lines where it landed harmlessly without detonation. I would imagine that many fuses were not punched due to nervousness and anxiety the soldier's were having to endure during the heat of battle. I found this overshot on private property away from the fighting. In a field that used as a Union Hospital site . This shell was 3' deep. Great piece to add to your collection with an ironclad history and provenance !
