What a cool piece. It's a Circa 1860 Silver plated pocket watch made by " M.J. Tobias Liverpool England" . MJ Tobias was the Rolex of the Civil War Period. Many well to do soldiers had them during the Civil War, both North and South. Especially southerners, as they were getting tons of goods and weapons from England. This example has an engraving of a Civil War Soldier laying on the ground with his musket on one side and on the other, it has an ante bellum lady with a hoop skirt dress embracing her soldier sweetheart. There is some wear to the soldier holding his sweetheart, but it can still be seen. The soldier laying on the ground with his musket is very clear. Another really cool thing is that it has a winding key with it and still works superbly, keeping PERFECT TIME . The condition shows use, but is in great condition. I have a friend that found a solid sterling silver case and solid gold internal "MJ Tobias" pocket watch in one of Confederate General Earl VanDorn's Confederate camps in north Mississippi. It was no doubt, a well to do Confederate Officer's. The one he dug was a higher grade with pure silver and gold, but it was the same watch. This example is silver plated and non-dug and runs perfectly.
