Wow! These don't come around too often, because there's only a handful in existence. It is listed as PLATE #320 in Mullinax's Confederate Buckle Book. Mullinax states that this buckle is a rarity of 9 and is one of the best known Star plates positively associated with the State of Texas. To my knowledge, there are around twelve specimens known. This example is very unique and historical, because the Texas soldier cut out the flat beveled star, for use as a hat pin . Probably using a pin knife. He did a very good job . Because The buckle still looks great, even with the star missing. Has almost all of the original lead still present. There are 3 small cracks in the back of the lead as pointed out in one of the pictures, that was surely done at the time the soldier was cutting out the star. The back hooks are missing in action. Ex- Robert Coli and ex-Terry Heilman collections. The late Terry Heilman was an old school Relic Hunter and collector. He used to hunt the old Dumfries camps in Virginia. Both Terry and Robert are well known and respected in the collecting community. This is a wonderful piece that displays superbly. A perfect dug example can run upwards to 17000.00- to 18000.00. This one is just as real and at a fraction of the price. Dig location along with all other details, will be supplied to the buyer. Don't miss this rare chance.
