Extremely Rare 1861 dated Counterfeit 2-1/2 Dollar gold piece. These are almost never seen. I only know of two others that have been found . One of those was dug by my friend Robert McDaniels, it was also a counterfeit 2-1/2 dollar. Also it was dug in another Confederate camp. It is much more rare than a real 1861 2-1/2 Dollar gold coin. This one was stamped out of brass and gold plated and would have been very hard to distinguish between the real and Counterfeit ones . Of course this dug one is a dead giveaway because most of the gold gilt is now gone and has a pretty chocolate patina to the brass with just enough gold left in all the right places to highlight the details of the coin . These were not soldier made , they were professionally produced. I think that it could very well have been made by the CONFEDERATE STATES GOVERNMENT, but that is only my opinion. This example was dug many years ago in a Confederate camp at Shiloh Battlefield on private property. Out of 40 years of collecting , this is the only one that I have ever seen. I have also pictured a real 1861 2-1/2 dollar gold coin for reference purposes . This example has been in my personal collection for many years. Don't miss this chance at this rare historical item.
