This is something you never see for sale. It is what is called a British BAKER BALL. This was the first rifled flintlock musket in the British Army and was used by greencoated sharpshooter Regiments here in the War of 1812 . The Percy Tennantry Volunteer Militia of the Duke of Northumberland at Alnwick Castle. The Duke of Northumberland formed his Militia in 1796, equipping them at his own expense, with the BAKER Flintlock Rifle. The BAKER Rifle was the first Rifle ever used by the British army , and was supplied to the elite sharpshooters of the 95th and 60th Rifle Regiments, some of whom served in the Revolutionary War. These were the only soldiers to wear green uniforms. These balls are .65 caliber and are encased in a cloverleaf leather stuck with shellac to the lead ball to grip the rifling of this early weapon. The balls were in fact hammered down into the muzzle. Each Rifleman was equipped with a mallet each and a very sturdy and thick ramrod. The rifles had an accurate effective range of 300 yards , compared to about 50 yards of the Brown Bess Muskets issued to the infantry Regiments. This bullet has been in my personal collection for over 35 years. I have never seen another one for sale. This bullet is in perfect non-dug condition and the leather sabot is all there and still stuck on the ball and could be used today. This is your chance to get a bullet in your collection that I doubt anyone else has.
