What a wonderful piece of history. The letter was written by Pvt George Sifleet's commanding officer, 2nd Lieut Charles M Libby , commanding company D of the 127 Illinois Infantry , to George Sifleet's father, Robert Sifleet and Family, notifying them of the death of their son George. I have a typed version of the letter in the pictures for easier reading. Also, the officer sent home with the letter, a brass ID Stencil, that belonged to Pvt George Sifleet. The 127 Illinois Infantry was camped in Madison Parish , LA, when Pvt George Sifleet took ill and died of chronic diarrhea. Please read the typed letter in the pictures for more details on him . As for 2nd Lieut Charles M Libby , he was later promoted to Captain of company D and was later killed at a battle near Atlanta GA. July 22, 1864. I have some records of the details on Capt Libby's Death certificate in the pictures. This is a really personal account in detail that is told in these pieces of Civil War History.
