Very cool and very early 1820's period Army general service greatcoat button. 21mm. It is listed as "GEN199" in Tice's button book. Has "UNITED STATES " as the backmark. It's in nice dug condition with no problems and the shank is present and accounted for. Has a chocolate patina , surface is a little grainy but not too bad. Everything is visible. I personally dug this example in a Plantation home in north Mississippi. The man that once lived there was a General in the Revolutionary War. He is buried there at the Plantation site in a small family cemetery. Unfortunately I don't remember his name as it's been over 30 years ago since I was there. Could have possibly been his in his later years after the Revolutionary War.
