What a wonderful piece! This Civil War Period Snuff Box was part of Dr Francis Lord's collection and has a letter from him . Dr Lord was one of the early pioneer collectors and researchers in our great hobby. On the back of this little jewel, you'll find where the soldier Inscribed:
"C A Burkholder
Comp G 84th Reg PA Vols
Boiling Springs
Cumb Co PA
Born Sept 2 1838
Enlisted Sept 13 1862"
Also there is a maker mark reading " PAT'D JAN 24 , 1860 ".
I Have included some additional history of this soldier as seen in the pictures. I have discovered that the birth date was probably misread during the deciphering of the inscription. He was actually born in 1833 instead of 1838 . This would have been easy to mistake the 3 for an 8 in the inscription. Dr Lord wrote Civil War research books and I think that this Snuff Box is probably in one of his books or somebody else's, as his collection has been highly publicized through the years. I don't know if it is published for sure, but it is highly probable. Here's your chance to own a documented piece from one of the early legendary collectors in our hobby.
