Item #: BR61

This is a nice and complete original leather cartridge box for a Civil War Pistol. This one has both the original belt loops intact as well as the closure tab and brass finial. On the center of the outer flap, you can see traces of the Newark New Jersey manufacturer, Davy stamped by the rivet on the outer flap. The leather is nice and pliable with an attractive look but has some flaking here and there. It measures about 6-1/4" x 4-1/2" in size . Now for the cool part ! There is an inscription written on the back of the outer flap. Absolutely genuine of the period, It reads
" Sgt A. ???????
13th Infantry CSA"

The " CSA " Sgt A. and 13th Infantry, is clear as a bell.
I have tried to decipher the last name and can come close because it is really fairly legible. I have tried in different lights and under different magnification but can't quit get there. I feel quite certain that someone with better eyes and better optical equipment will decipher the last name. That will open up alot of history behind this piece and the soldier that carried it. What we do know is that this soldier was a Sergeant in the 13th Infantry CSA Confederate army. If we only knew what state would be a big help. There is lots more research that can be done on this little jewel .
