This is one cool item !!! First of all this Cap Box is 100% Confederate Manufactured and is as Rebel as it gets . The lead finial , the stitched belt loops and the crude overall construction, are all traits of southern arsenals manufacturing . The Confederate Cheif of Ordinance ordered finials , scabbard tips and the like , to be made with lead or pewter , due to the dangerously low supplies of copper and brass in the southern arsenals . The brass was reserved for Items of higher priority. Lead and pewter worked just fine for finals and such. This Cap Box is quite attractive, but has been through a lot of campaigning. The leather is a little stiff and there is some stitching separation here and there . All is present and accounted for except one of the belt loops is missing in action. Also, has some letters scratched on outer flap, as seen in the pictures. I can make out a W , but nothing else. This Confederate Cap Box with Lead Finial is a rare and tough to find item in its own right, but what makes this one REALLY STAND OUT FROM THE REST is that it appears to be struck by a bullet on the outer flap , as seen in the pictures, it looks like it was struck by a 36 caliber pistol ball on the outer edge. I have examined the wound quite extensively and it is very evident that the wound is ancient. I personally believe it is bullet struck . One of the outer ear flaps is detached from the box , but included, and it is on the same side as the possible bullet strike and could have been detached at the time of the strike. You can see as in the pictures. Don't miss your chance on this one .
